Avanos Advanced Tourism High School
Semih Kaya

Avanos Advanced Tourism High School is a place with additional activities and courses to formal high school classes. The students are raised here specifically to become tour guides and eventually represent their city and region in front of tourists. The school is designated not only as a school but also as a place with touristic value which means the school will be a destination point on the daily route of tourists. Since the project area located in a central point in Avanos and right next to the Taş Köprü, every tourist passes by here. In order to attract their attention and convince people to use the walking path inside the school area, we placed a walking path with smooth lines and visually pleasing environment around it such as a grape field and small forest. By using this road, people will also get the chance to observe the wine-making or pottery classes.

The design is created by following the existing walking path near Kızılırmak and connecting it to our site through a pedestrian bridge. The form of the building his creating a contrast with the path and the waves on the façade to have a stronger stance on its axis. This path is passing through the school building several times to create opportunities for our students to meet with tourists, interact with them to develop their language skill as while becoming more confident and extravert which are necessary soft skills they will need. By using the path, public will have access to the auditorium, activity area and library but the students’ privacy was also an important point. That’s why the second floor of the building is not providing access to public and has areas for students to socialize and do their activities.

The building is located next to the water stream passing from the middle of the site and it is used as a boundary for wild landscape and the rest of the city. Since the region around doesn’t have many forests around, this area will be a nice place for both our students and the city folk to spend time in nature. The area next to the forest is a semi open exhibition area which partially blocks the view of forest from the school to make it more valuable so that people spare a few seconds to enjoy it.
