HIGH SCHOOL WITH AN ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION MODEL

The Cultural and Tourism High School of Avanos seeks to utilize the touristic nature of the city and its historical context. As such, the concept of this high school is the breaking down of public-private relationships and providing an open high school for the people of Avanos,this is done through the utilization of cultural and traditional aspects of the city such as pottery, arts & crafts, and fishing. During the site visit, it was rather apparent that there is a distinction between the New and the Old Avanos. Our site, sitting just by the bridge that connects these two parts of the city, makes it an ideal meeting point and communal and public activities.

 

The uniting point of both these parts of Avanos lies in their tradition, history, and culture, and it would be wasted effort if it is not utilized properly. Thus, the Avanos Cultural and Tourism High School Center is designed to provide a space for  a three-way relationship: students, community residents, and tourists. This school will become a center for cultural,arts & tourism education.

 

The building form started with the placement of mass in accordance with the axes in the city and is later divided into specific functions and its height changed for dynamism. The public-private relationship is solved through different height levels. The public can access mostly the interior of the upper level of the building while students are free to go anywhere. The public can explore the landscape in the lower levels but are not able to access the interior of the building freely.

 

The building revolves around the public cultural center. Most activities occur there such as pottery workshops, theatrical productions, and art exhibitions.
