HIGH SCHOOL WITH AN ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION MODEL

Pebble Sculpture High School
Buket Avcı
As a result of the analyzes and syntheses made in the field, it has been observed that the local people tend to art. A sculpture school was designed based from pottery and other arts. In Avanos, an alternative bridge was designed for transportation to the school, as the image of the city is provided by bridges and the existing bridges are insufficient. The bridge took its organic form from the movements of the Kızıl Irmak. This bridge, which invites the people of the city to the school, expands at some points and turns into open exhibition spaces, in some places slits are opened to help light enter the lower floors. In addition, the bridge provides a new bike path to the city. An exhibition space was created there to make sense of the endpoint of the bridge outside the site. While the bridge brings people into public spaces, it takes them away from the educational space. The training areas consist of 4 studios and 5 classrooms. The windows between the studios are opened in suitable weather to create common open working areas. Since there is a slope caused by the level difference between the studios, the open working areas have been made stepped. Studios have two doors and one door is for material entry. Each studio has a storage room and wet spaces for students to meet their needs without leaving the studio. Students leaving the studio go to the main building and reach the necessary classrooms for the theoretical lessons. There is a dining hall in the main building to meet the nutritional needs of students. In addition, the administrative units in the main building were gathered together.
There are 2 elevators and 2 stairs to the upper floor of the main building. The glass wall behind the existing suspended stairs was built to emphasize the staircase (you can see it in section b-b). The upstairs units are open to the public and include an art library, workshop spaces, exhibition spaces and a sales office.
In addition, the expanding areas of the school garden also function as an open exhibition area. Educational support is provided to students through the exhibition and sale of products made by students.
The school designed provides the requirements for a sculpture school while making the local people more active.
