Batuhan Şen/ Nexus Stairs

Nexus stairs is a social housing project designed to attract the user with its special, complicated paths and stairs designed for the Hürriyet neighbourhood of Kayseri.

What stands out in the project, which is used to break down the closed communication problem and social lifelessness that people experience with each other, is the project, which offers 2 residential buildings and a library and study building between these residential buildings, as well as a study area for the students of the nearby Sema Author High School, as well as for high school and university students who may come from outside. It creates a more social and powerful use of space.

As for the residential part of the project, 1 duplex unit was designed by respecting the neighbourhood’s own extended family culture, as well as 1 separate unit for newly married couples or nuclear families, and units consisting of mini houses designed for student use by experiencing functional differentiation by separating the floor with the plus function. The balconies on each floor, and especially the area formed by the corridor extending to the balconies at the entrance and even extending outside, are a special socialization area designed to strengthen neighbourly relations and establish a stronger social environment. The library building, on the other hand, has 3 floors and is connected to the ground floor by bridges, stairs and elevators leading from the buildings. Thus, the area is open to all kinds of users, not just building users.

Architecturally, the building is made of reinforced concrete and covered with Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete panels using the curtain wall technique for its cost and flexible use. The stair railings are covered with pink steel railings, inspired by the MAXXI museum stairs. At the end of these railings, it is envisaged to arrange a path of pink bands, inspired by the golden brick road, to attract the user.

Nexus Stairs constitutes a strong and solid social housing project for the people of Hürriyet, especially with the logic of publicization in the terrace overlooking Erciyes mountain and the portals stairs that it calls to this terrace.
