GUM TREE project adopts a design approach that respects the unique vegetation and green texture of Büyükada since its existence. The gum tree, which stands out among hundreds of different plant species on the island, is the focal point of the project. This design aims to bring together people of all ages, cultures, nationalities, and characteristics so that they can produce various products that can be obtained from the mastic tree. GUM TREE takes into consideration disabled individuals, taking into account accessibility principles, in the landscape design of the site area located on the sloping land of Büyükada. During the design process, squares, where people can come together, relax, and carry out various activities, were integrated into the landscape. The functions are divided into three separate areas. The first functional area includes education on the health benefits of mastic tree resin and aromatherapy. In the second function area, there is a section where sweet products made from mastic tree resin that can be consumed in bulk are produced and taste tests are carried out. Finally, in the third part, there is a studio area for both children and adults for various products derived from mastic tree resin. The stone and wood used in the project represent an approach that respects the texture of the island. The buildings are built with natural materials and traditional techniques, aiming to keep the natural plants of the island alive from a modern perspective. In this way, the GUM TREE project aims to preserve the historical and natural riches of Büyükada while also offering a contemporary design aesthetic.
