Social Gathering Space at Büyükada
ARCH301 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN III
Yasemin Pehlivan Seeway
Büyükada has had an important maritime culture since its existence. The fact that the site area is Kariye-i Kariye, the first fishing village of Büyükada, makes the concept even more true to its roots. Seeway, which takes its name from the concept, adopts a design approach that integrates with the sea by envisioning an inclusive design where people of all ages, nationalities, cultures, and different characteristics come together to produce and design vehicles to be used at sea. While designing the landscape on the sloping land where the site area is located, accessibility was prioritized, considering disabled individuals. Later, squares, where people could gather together, rest, and do various activities, were integrated into the landscape. The design was supported by directing the open and semi-open areas of the closed areas and the landscaping arrangements. The design form of the buildings was inspired by the Museum building near the area and the trees in the area. We can divide buildings into 5 according to their functions. The workshop where large boats and surfboards are made, the studio where they are designed, the cafe, the studio where they make and design miniature sails, and the workshop where they produce fishing nets, fishing rods, and sailboat fabric. The buildings, in which stone and wood are used as carriers, aim to keep the maritime culture alive from a modern perspective by showing a harmonious dance of natural materials and traditional techniques, respecting the texture of the island.
