Social Gathering Space at Büyükada
ARCH301 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN III
Khadijah Y. Jamaris Serenity Heights
Buyukada as an island has an interesting dynamic and relationship between locals, authorities and tourists. While the island relies on tourism, tensions between locals and tourists are still frequent. This project aims to fill the gap of communal spaces in Buyukada by establishing a "healing by doing" hub that promotes healing through art, nature, and community engagement. Centered around the local residents (particularly elderly, housewives, and children) and tourists, the space aims to integrate elements of art therapy, expansive nature gardens, and communal areas. Nature and plants are integral to the project, intertwining with culinary, cosmetics, and art elements. From local herb-infused cuisine to botanical cosmetics workshops, and flora-inspired artworks, all reflect nature's influence, creating deep connections to the environment.
The design is separated functionally into a culinary main building, herbal and cosmetics, and art, all connected together in the center square where socialization and community building can be encouraged through storytelling and performances. Elements such as building techniques and natural landscapes are kept local such as using timber, rammed earth, and local flora to preserve the culture, environment, and pride of the island.
