Interconnecting Shade Pavilion
Linking Openness and Enclosure
Description

In continuity with the outcomes of the previous studio, this studio is dedicated to developing students’ skills of experiential learning by interacting them with the architectural space in various context. The students will encounter with simple problems of architectural design along with a couple of themes introduced. By having several projects and some workshops, the students will have the chance to challenge with spatial issues and gain necessary skills and intellectual background to build up their own way.

Final Project Description
Module 3 of your design project will take place at Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan Millet Bahçesi, a recently opened park in Kayseri. This massive park offers various functionalities and is managed by the municipality. While the park's overall design is complete, some construction and landscaping elements remain unfinished. The park serves as a large open space for public events and gatherings, but it lacks shade structures. Due to the intense sunlight, open areas are underutilized during the day. Additionally, there's a shortage of designated spaces for people to gather and interact in both open and semi-open environments.

Your challenge: Create a shade pavilion that acts as a seamless link between the park's enclosed buildings/or the one you will designand open areas. This structure should not only bridge the physical gap but also encourage park visitors to utilize the open spaces throughout the day by providing much-needed shade and a welcoming gathering point.

Requirements

Here is the list of minimum requirements for this project. Please remember that any further creative attempt or any critical approach are welcome.
Overhead Canopy:
- The park is an open space lacking any upper structure, making it uncomfortably sunny for users. To address this, design an upper structure that complements the existing environment.
Interaction Space:
- Any space of interaction, exchange or gathering. It is up to you. However, this part should have closed, semi-open and open spaces in a balanced manner. It may also include wet spaces. The closed part should be no bigger than 40 m2. Consider the elderly, parents with children and passengers with disabilities.
- Make good use of open spaces.Design of open spaces includes leveling the ground and considering human movements (entrances of the surrounding buildings, trees, walking paths, etc.)
- Existing trees should be preserved and used as a reference in design, however, bushes, flower beds and similar landscape elements (hard or soft surfaces) may be removed or relocated.
