SHADE AND SHOWCASE NEXUS PAVILION// HASAN SERIF
Project Concept: The Shade and Showcase Nexus Pavilion at Recep Tayyip Erdogan Millet Bahçesi in Kayseri aims to address the critical lack of shaded areas within Türkiye's largest park. This innovative pavilion not only provides essential shade but also connects an existing seating area to an important pedestrian road point and is transformed into a multifunctional space. It encourages visitors to expand their viewpoints by watching an exhibition of Kayseri’s young talented artists, who are chosen based on their exhibition quality through an online forum such as Pinterest, Instagram, and more. This creates an inviting environment for artists and gives visitors more reasons to revisit the pavilion with their friends and family. The Nexus Pavilion offers a place for relaxation and social interaction.
Context: Recep Tayyip Erdogan Millet Bahçesi, recently built and recognized as the largest park in Türkiye, offers vast open spaces near an artificial river, perfect for hosting events. Despite its expansive layout and amenities like bathrooms, restaurants, and landmarks, the park lacks sufficient shaded areas for visitors to rest. The given site, an immense plain adjacent to the artificial river, presents an excellent opportunity for designing the interconnected shade pavilion. This project leverages the park's strengths—ample space, proximity to essential amenities, and picturesque views—while addressing weaknesses such as noise pollution and the absence of emergency facilities.
Aura and Structural Character: The pavilion features an abstract design that fits seamlessly into its purpose. Its structure connects to different parts of the park all people to take multiple routes and explore the park in a new and unique experience. Thee existing stair seating area can be entirely seen from any point in the pavilion, which will enhance visitors to visit the place. The design incorporates a closed space totaling 40m², serving additional functions such as a rest area and a final exhibition. Openings in the pavilion walls offer unobstructed views of the park's beauty, ensuring that visitors can enjoy nature. The pavilion's design is unobtrusive yet intriguing, inviting pedestrians to explore and participate in its offerings.
Narrative Paragraph: As a first-year architecture student at Abdullah Gül University (AGU), my day starts at 6:30 am, greeted by the gentle sunlight streaming through my window. After a quick shower, I head to campus, where the air is fragrant with the scent of blooming trees. By 12:30 pm, I find myself at the bustling school cafeteria for lunch, surrounded by the lively chatter of fellow students. The core of my day takes place in our studio, a vibrant space where I work on projects alongside other passionate students. The studio buzzes with creativity, filled with the sounds of discussions, pencil sketches, and mouse clicks. By midnight, I wrap up and head back to my dorm. By 12:30 am, I'm in bed, reflecting on the day's positives and challenges, ready to embrace another day of learning and creativity tomorrow.
