GREEN SPROUT PAVILION// SARA ZINO

The Green Sprout Pavilion is an innovative project that skillfully combines contemporary utility with cultural heritage. Located within the vast Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Millet Bahçesi park in Kayseri, the pavilion honors the local custom of gathering madımak, or Indian knotgrass, while also addressing the park's demand for shady places. The goal of this project is to develop a fun and instructive environment that encourages neighborhood engagement and environmental consciousness.
The idea for my design derives from the cultural importance of madımak, a plant that is commonly collected by Kayseri's older population, especially ladies. I was motivated to build a pavilion that teaches guests about agriculture and sustainability in addition to offering shelter by this traditional custom. An instructional facility inside the Green Sprout Pavilion teaches kids about gardening, native plants, and environmentally friendly methods. Families are welcome to assemble, unwind, and take in the park's natural beauty in addition to this closed area.
The design of the pavilion includes an overhanging canopy that provides much-needed shade, enhancing the daytime appeal of the park's open spaces. Families can watch their kids engage in gardening activities from cozy lounging places in the semi-open regions. Children can interact directly with their crops and learn about plant care in the open spaces, which are equipped with elements at children's height that serve as self-gardening boxes.
A key component of my design is sustainability. Reducing its environmental effect and functioning as a teaching tool, the enclosed area incorporates rainwater collecting equipment and passive cooling techniques. As the park's demands and cultural customs change, the design is also flexible enough to accommodate future additions or modifications.
The Green Sprout Pavilion serves as evidence of how design can respect local customs and create places that are sustainable and useful for the community. It is a location where culture, education, and environment come together to create an enduring effect on the park and its patrons.
