MUSIC INSTITUTION // MANAL LAKHAL
Echoes in the Open
Location: Recep Tayyip Erdogan Millet Bahçesi, Kayseri, Turkey
Project Type: Institutional
“Echoes in the Open” is a music institution thoughtfully situated within a public park. This strategic location aligns perfectly with the project’s primary aim: to blend seamlessly with the outside world, encompassing both people and nature. Nestled close to the lake and the event area, the institution features a distinctive, self-standing wooden structure. The wood panels, each measuring 16 meters in length and 50 centimetres inwidth, are arranged in a system that provides access from all sides.
The enclosed space of the project covers 40m² and includes:
• Administration Office: 15m²
• Classrooms: The remaining area comprises four small classrooms with foldable walls, allowing them to open into each other as needed. Transitioning from the enclosed to the semi-open area, we have shaded seating spaces derived from the main structure. In the open area, there is a small stage with a seating capacity of over 25 persons. This stage is designed for both academics and students to perform, fostering opportunities for sharing their music. Classes are primarily conducted in the semi-open spaces unless interrupted by inclement weather. This setup encourages park visitors to join, sit, watch, and enjoy the music, thereby fulfilling the institution’s mission of integrating with both the park’s visitors and its natural surroundings. The process of designing this project was smooth, thanks to the course structure which included site visits to the park and continuous feedback from our instructors. They tracked our progress from the beginning, providing valuable critiques that helped shape the final design. As an international architecture student at Abdullah Gul University, my life is a lively mix of studying and socializing. Living in the campus dorms, I often pull late nights in the 24/7 studios working on projects. Being part of the International Association Club adds a lot to my university experience. My days usually start with a workout at the university gym. I love hanging out and studying in the campus cafes. One of the coolest parts of my routine is managing my friends' music band, organizing events and practices, which keeps things exciting. Staying connected with my friends and family back in Morocco is really important to me. And if there's one thing I'd change, it's that I wish the vending machines had more water. Balancing my studies, social life, and band management keeps my days busy and fulfilling.
