Botanical Research Center
Botanical Research Center is a research center designed to benefit from the green areas around the historical environment, botanical gardens and the flora of Istanbul. It si located at Fatih, İstanbul. Around the project area, there are some important historical architectural elements. Environmental factors were taken into account in the design of the research center. There is Valens Aqueduct on the southwest side, Gazanfer Ağa Madrasah in the southeast and a water scale in the area.
The herbarium design created by collecting and drying the plants allows the active use of the research center every day of the year. In the design, a new search for a form has been started with the arrival routes of pedestrians. In the openings of the aqueduct, some parts of the building have openings to facilitate access to people, and on the contrary, the window openings are designed to be planted in the interior design in some parts. In order to use the topographical land in the project area in the most efficient way, functions for general use and researchers were determined and different entries were defined for public and researchers.In the researchers entrance part tried to create a courtyard at this level and the building was pulled back to define the entrance for the public entrance. After determining the main entrances as public and private, 2 more entrances were created to strengthen the entrance axes. Archive and drying areas are designed for researchers according to the needs of the laboratory and laboratory. Researchers can reach to herbarium and public part easily. And also researcher have their own terrace for visual connection with entrance courtyard. The foyer, exhibition area and herbarium are located in the center of the building. In the central part, a large staircase is designed for use, thus strengthening the central circulation of the building. In addition, the staircase for more public use and it can be more activity area with foyer and exhibition for public users. Cafes, libraries, education classes, workshop areas, auditorium and exhibition areas are designed for public use. Herbarium sometimes has a multi-functional structure with the feature of merging with the exhibition area.
As the load carrying system of the research center, reinforced concrete columns and hollow blocks were used. Openings have been created in the central roof section and the roof sections of the research laboratory to receive natural light. In the window openings protruding on the facade, dark concrete plaster application was designed and light concrete plaster application was designed in the other parts. Aluminum panels, on the other hand, were separated in pieces and adapted to the form of the building by opening certain gaps.
