The city of Istanbul is one of the settlements where social and environmental changes and developments have been experienced from the past to the present and the impact of these changes is the most intense. The city of Istanbul is perhaps the city most affected by the complex and dynamic nature of human-environment relations, and the idea of a research center based on these problems emerged. This research center deals with environmental anthropology.

What is this environmental anthropology?

The complex and dynamic structure of human-environment relations, the relations of different human societies with their environment, includes studying the direct or indirect effects of these relations on those cultures.

What is the purpose of this research center?

-To show people clearly the relationship between the environment and human communities,
- To explain the relationships between the environment and social organization,
- Understanding the cultural background of environmental problems.

Some important environmental values had to be taken into account when designing this research center. These were Gazanferaga madrasah, Bozdogan aqueduct, and the water tower in the area. The area had an inclined structure and it was necessary to manage the slopes well. Therefore, not crushing the surrounding buildings and important building blocks was considered as the main idea. It was wanted to be integrated by taking entrances to the building from Fatih Park, which is next to the Bozdogan Aqueduct. The building was divided into two masses because of the difference between private and public spaces, and I wanted to demolish that completely separate order with a bridge. I wanted to make the building more inclusive by creating an event courtyard with the axes taken from Fatih Park. I never thought of hiding the building, and I opened skylights where people can see from above in areas such as the foyer, and I wanted to provide indirect contact with the building. In public spaces, I designed areas such as libraries, workshops, conference halls, and exhibition halls that people can reach publicly, and in private areas, I had the aim of adding all necessary organization areas for researchers. I saw the Bozdogan Aqueduct as a natural facade element in my building and I wanted to leave the surfaces facing the aqueduct simple. In my building, I tried to design my facades with wooden protective materials. And I wanted to use kinetic star-shaped facades in places facing my south facades. I wanted to use reinforced concrete as a carrier system in my design.

The CSE (CultureSocietyEnvironment) research center takes its place in the historical peninsula in a structure that is directly connected with the environment and people and with the necessary circulation.
