This research center’s theme is computational archaeological research center. So, it will include huge historic context of İstanbul in a new way. The computational archaeology is combining the archaeology with the technology. The main research way will be the visualizing the archaeological artifacts and sites in computer environment. There will be two ways that will be used in this research center. These are photogrammetry with drone and 3d laser scanner. Moreover, there will be inventory collection of the archaeological sites and pieces that were found. The other topics that will be examined in this research center are examining the effects of the archeological site on urban development, creating possible scenarios and 3d models about the archeological site as what if it would be survived and overlapping and investigating all of these topics. The users of this research center will be archeologists, architects, historians, urbanists, and computer engineers.
The design idea of the building is coming from the domes of the Gazanferağa Madrasah that is nearby the area. This idea is evolved as curved plan type in the building. The auditorium which is spherical has its design idea from the central dome of the madrasa. In its original use, the central dome was the place where the people gathered and get educated. In the new building auditorium has the similar purpose of use. In addition, Gazanferağa madrasa will be used as hologram exhibition of the research center. All people can experience it since it will be in use of public. There will be holograms of the archaeological sites and the artifacts that were produced in the research center.
As the madrasa the 0 level of the building and the auditorium will also be used by the public. The entrance of this part from the Kovacılar street as the madrasa. The spaces in this part can be defined as workshop space, café, atrium, and library that is connected with the upper floors. The upper floors will be used by the researchers. This part has two entrances, one of them is from the Kovacılar street and other one is from the Serdap street. The spaces that is in the private part is the computer labs for 3d and research, administration, small café, working offices, inventory offices and digital archieve that is connected to the library.
Finally, the facade design is inspired from the bricks of aqueduct. It has some closed and open parts. The density of the closed parts is changing according to different façade directions.
