Performing Art High School

Although the performing arts in contemporary arts high schools in several cities of Turkey, there is no performing arts department, in the contemporary arts high school in Kayseri. Considering the contribution of performing arts to students, this project aimed to create a performing arts school that is visually intertwined with the public and as well as with nature. Talas is one of the most active areas in Kayseri. The fact that Erciyes University nearby supports this situation. This area is a good place for the performing arts school in terms of integration with the public, as it is easy to access due to its location on the tram line, eating places and socializing areas around it. The main concept of the building is to create a transition from the street to the town hall, to ensure that the public establishes a visual relationship with the studios and to interact with them. At the same time, I positioned the auditorium close to the street and I made this transition high to separate the public and private area of the school. The project includes 8 classrooms, 2 studios, an auditorium, a library, private study areas, workshops spaces, room of teachers, administration offices, cafeteria, and dining area which is integrated with the garden in the common area. The building consists of two parts, the floors are placed diagonally. There is a level difference of one and a half meters. And in the middle of the buildings, there is a core circulation area, which is an open space, that students can spend their free time and have a rest. People can reach the entrance of the auditorium and the foyer via the public axis, and as they pass, they can also see the garden where the students sit. In order to create a semi-open transition from the downstairs entrance to the upstairs entrance, I extruded the first-floor facade 2m on the left side of the North. Since the building repeats each other very regularly, especially on the classroom side which has 2 same floors, I placed sticks on the facade in order to disrupt this repeat order with different layouts that have various spacings. In order for the dancers to be intertwined with nature, I covered the facade of the studios, which overlooked the wooded part of the garden, with full-length windows. And also, by creating a small floor in front of the studios, I wanted to create a balcony like a special area under the trees. On the other side, I organized the food space as a launch box with creating a self-service common space and I linked this place with the garden. I solved the lighting problem of the corridors on the lower floors with the gaps which open to the garden.
