Contemporary Art Center / Cihan Gürbüz

Due to the location of the Gaziantep, there is a high density of population of immigrants from Syria and the middle east. When we analyse the city, we see that there is separation as well. Most of the immigrants’ settlements are located on the north and the south side of the city. The project site is located in the historical part of the city called Bey Neighbourhood. According to the urban development of the municipality, Bey Neighbourhood will be converted into an Art street. The project site is located in a place where is a +4.5-meter level difference. In addition to that, due to the location of Gaziantep, there is a rapid increase in the number of population immigrants might cause some problems within the society. There is a separation between two communities, due to the problems like education, language, tradition and lack of common ground. To be able to create a common ground, contemporary art is focused due to its functionality. Contemporary art is part of a cultural dialogue that concerns larger contextual frameworks such as personal and cultural identity, family, community, and nationality. Contemporary artists work in a globally influenced, culturally diverse, and technologically advancing world. Design intention ii to use contemporary art to create a medium that will be a ‘’BRIDGE’’ in between communities.

When we look at contemporary art, we are in need of secluded spaces for artists and spaces for public use. In addition to that, modular structures are created and the expanded structural system is designed to emphasize the modularity of the building. 2x2 m units are used for circulation; 4x4 and 6x6 m units are used for other functions. The building consists of parts semi-public, and private with their own vertical circulation cores and connecting corridors between them. Places are located around the courtyard and galleries. There are cafeteria, security, workshop and exhibition spaces on the ground level at the street level, offices and art ateliers on the upper level, and accommodation and art galleries on the other floors.
