Excavation House and Research Center/Rukiye Er
Since Urfa has an arid climate, there are no trees in the area except for in the settlement. In this area, which has a sloping land, protection from the sun is another problem.
There are three main functional buildings in the project and each has a common area within itself. This common area was inspired by the Urfa houses and intended to be designed as a courtyard. However, since there are no trees in the environmental conditions, it was thought that greening this common area would be productive for the people who spend time there.
The accommodation has a central courtyard. As in Urfa houses, each room is connected to an external corridor. Due to the slope of the land, a part of a building is under the ground without causing any lighting problem. There are rooms for the excavation team in the accommodation unit. There is also a downstairs service room and a small kitchen in the research center. In the accommodation unit, there are areas inspired by the iwan.
The research center also has a courtyard, but this courtyard differs from the accommodation unit in that it functions like an inner garden. Circulation in this area is provided by ramps and the necessary units were placed according to a certain order. Between these units, there are areas to spend time and work outdoors more comfortably. The stairs have been also added for easier access. In this way, you can both spend time in the inner garden and facilitate circulation where necessary. The depots are wanted to be in connection with the research center. The depots and the research center have two different access. One is an access that reaches directly to the interior of the depots and the other is an access that reaches the open area in front of the depots.
An interior garden was also desired in the visitor center, but unlike the courtyard, it was designed in an integrated manner with the exhibition platforms. With the ramp the idea of circulation the people coming from the parking level, at the lower level to the upper level more easily emerged with the idea of guiding and walking around. The exhibition platforms that are compatible with these ramps provide a flow and can easily guide people. After coming from the excavation area, they can rest in the cafeteria area and meet their needs. As a final experience, guests who down from the green ramp to the lower level can reach the parking area. They can see the semi-open workshop area while downing the ramp.
Area is for workshop and seminar guests located next to the visitor center. It was intended to avoid directing only the guests who come to the exhibition area to this area. The workshop area, which has a large semi-open area, also has a closed area consisting of seminar hall and study areas in this area.
Buildings, which have an inner garden, is in an arid area, it is thought that there may be an irrigation problem. For this reason, it is thought that rainwater collection channels should be created in the garden and on the roofs.
