Karahantepe Excavation House and Research Center / Enes Burak Karatas
The main inspiration while designing this project was design approach reflected in archeological sites in Şanlıurfa such as Göbeklitepe, Nevali Çori and last but not least Karahantepe. This project is designed by using ‘part to whole’ strategy. Firstly, parts of the project designed according to needs and than they were combined to build the whole project. During this process these parts slightly changes their forms and dimensions to create a harmony as a whole. This approach has a very old historical background one can see it in archeological sites and also in vernacular architecture of Şanlıurfa such as Şanlıurfa Houses, Harran Houses and Siverek Houses. The design of this project aims to create a biophilic architecture example by using natural materials such as mass timber and natural stones and by having courtyards just like traditional Şanlıurfa Houses. These features of the project aim to provide a peaceful relation with nature for its users. Since excavation house workers and visiters have such different needs and requirements from this project it is designed as two seperate buildings to allow both user groups to have their own spaces by providing private living spaces. But there are some kind of intersections of these two buildings in terms of function. For instance Conference hall and Library designed for both user profiles to allow them come together and at the same time have their own spaces.
